The Colon Theatre in Buenos Aires is one of the best opera houses in the world. Opened in 1908 in the name Teatro Colon this theatre with 2,367 seats and standing room for 1,000 took twenty years to complete. This theater is situated in 9 de Julio Avenue which is the center of the city. But the principle entrance is on Libertad Street. So if you love theatre then you must drop in this place and visit from the underground rehearsal halls to main action area.

History of first Teatro Colon:
When operas started to become popular among the common masses given by touring companies the first Teatro Colon was built in 1856 and opened on 25 th April 1857 with Verdi’s La Traviata, just four years after its Italian premiere. With 2,500 seats and the cazuela i.e. a separate gallery for women, this place became a popular venue for operas. But the necessity for modern adeptness forced the authorities to sell the theatre to a bank.

History of the Present Teatro Colon
The foundation stone of the present Teatro Colon was laid in 1889 under the direction of Architect Francesco Tamburini and his pupil who designed the present theatre. Due to various reasons the theatre took twenty years to construct and it was finally opened in 25 th May, 1908. With perfect curatives and advanced stage areas the interior design of the theatre reflects a rich scarlet and gold décor.

The Colon theatre is the home to the nation’s art and culture. The grand and outstanding Colon Theatre comprises the nation’s history at the same time. This theatre attracts talents from all over the world. Over the years the theatre has entertained people like, Titta Ruffo, Amelita Galli-Curci, Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, etc.

Due to politicaland economic conditions of Europe the Colon Theatre had received a setback. But it is reviving slowly and some remodeling work is going on.
